The end of Summer doesn't mean the end of lawn care!

The Summer months are behind us, Fall is upon us and Winter is coming up quickly. With the cooler weather moving in, a lot of people think it's time to slow down on lawn care. However, not only is it essential to keep up with lawn care throughout the Fall, it is actually the most beneficial time to do so! During this time of year, grass is steadily absorbing moisture, energy and nutrients to prepare for the dormant winter months. Providing your lawn with the proper care it needs through out the Fall will ensure a healthy lush lawn in the Spring.

Want to know the basics? Here are some tips!

Continue Mowing

Yes, you need to continue mowing. Although it doesn't seem to grow as quickly, you still need to mow and water as needed throughout the Fall.

*Pro-tip: Lowering the blades on the mower for the last few cuttings of the year can allow more sunlight to reach the crowns of the grass and helps prevent browning through out the Winter.

Aerate the Soil

Fall is also an ideal time to aerate your lawn. Aeration is the process of perforating your lawn with small holes to alleviate soil compaction and allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the roots.

Rake the Leaves

I know they make for wonderful photos, and no one enjoys raking them, but you should start cleaning them up sooner rather than later! If you give them a chance to layer up and collect moisture from rain and dew, they can suffocate your lawn and leave brown patches in the Spring. If left long enough, they can even breed fungal diseases! An alternative to raking is to collect them with a lawnmower fitted with a collection bag or a vacuum system. You can also use them as compost or mulch for your garden in the Spring.

Fertilize

Most lawn experts will agree that the most effective time to fertilize your lawn is in the Fall. Why? The grass leaves may be growing more slowly than before, but the grass roots and rhizomes will continue to grow quickly. Applying fertilizer evenly throughout your lawn mid-to-late Fall will help deliver essential nutrients to the roots, helping them grow deeper and reserve nutrients needed for healthy growth. If you want a strong lush lawn this Spring, fertilizing throughout the Fall and Winter months correctly is the trick!

Fill in the Bare Areas

Do you have any bare or brown patches in your lawn? Now is your chance to fix them!

Fall is the perfect time for overseeding and taking advantage of the ideal seeding germination conditions. The seeds can obtain more moisture throughout the cooler more mild days of the season. Be sure to choose the correct seed and fertilizer for your lawn, spread evenly throughout all bare or brown patches and water accordingly.

Weed Control

If you have a lawn, chances are you have had some frustrations with some type of weed.

Now is your chance to fight back!

Throughout the Fall most weeds and plants are absorbing anything that comes their way, including weed killer. Applying a weed killer or herbicide to your lawn during this prime time can help eliminate the problem come Spring time!
